It has been a full day for Mr Gossett and me here in Alaska. We arrived in Skagway overnight and when we woke, the boat we were on had docked. We packed our bags and put them out for transport to the land part of our adventure while we did our orientation for what is ahead for us. We have been set up with a group of folks to tour via train and bus between Skagway and Fairbanks for our departure home when our trip concludes. We are staying here in Skagway two nights and we are on our own to see and do as we please. We had lunch at the Red Onion Saloon & Brother and yes, there was a brothel at the saloon for the frontiersmen to frequent. Kind of reminds me of the early days of the Peerless Bar & Grill when the brothel was upstairs there too. It was quite an experience being served by a young girl dressed like a woman with few morals and a lot of cleavage showing. The food was good. We had a salmon dip with pita wedges that was pretty darn good. Mr. Gossett had the pulled pork sandwich and I had the “Floosy” sandwich which was a turkey sandwich with some fancy trimmings. I really liked it along with the soup of the day which was a seafood chowder. Yes, we have been eating good while in Alaska. Can’t complain about that one.
We have been pretty much worn our after waking up really early to be at our orientation at 7:15 this morning. We thought we were dismissed at the end of the orientation to go to our bus but somehow we didn’t get our bus number. I was in a major panic thinking we had gotten lost from our group because we took the elevator instead of the steps to disembark the boat. Come to find out, Mr. Gossett and I along with four others took the elevator and didn’t know that our group was stopped in route to the bus because it had not arrived to pick us up. When I found out we hadn’t been left behind, I felt much better about things. We were able to get on our bus and made our way on a small tour around the small community of Skagway. When the bus driver parked at the hotel (which is owned by Holland America Cruise Lines) we were able to eat lunch and do whatever until 1:00 when our room would be ready. We waited and waited and finally, we walked to the hotel and waited there. While in the lobby, I was able to visit with a beautiful Alaskan Husky who was very sociable. I loved on him for a bit, talk with his owner and as I walked away, he pawed at me as if he were saying, “don’t leave yet.” So I didn’t. He got some more attention then I went back to where I was seated with Mr. Gossett. We finally got to our room around 1:30 and have pretty much been getting some much needed rest. I actually napped for a couple hours when Mr. Gossett woke me at around 4:00 asking if I was hungry and wanted to go to the hotel cafe to eat because it was after 7:00. He read the time on his laptop wrong. It hadn’t done the time change thingie and he got confused. He was an hour early to eat. I’m passing. I’m not much up to wanting to leave our room. I think television is a good option along with my Diet Dr. Pepper. First one I’ve had since we left home on Tuesday.
The interesting part of our land excursion is the fact that while in Juneau, I found us some nice walking canes and we’ve been using them. Mr. Gossett needs it worse than I do but getting some special treatment has been nice. My knees haven’t been in the greatest shape over the last couple years so, having a walking cane is rather handy. Mr. Gossett has had so me hip and knee issues and the walking cane has really come in handy for him.
We will be in Skagway two nights and on our on until Monday morning when we board a train for our next stop. I will be updating our adventure along the way and I’m glad you’ve joined me for the ride.
God Bless and Happy Travels!
