Knitting for a Cause

I realize it’s been a while since I’ve posted anything on what’s going on in my crazy world, and it has been crazy. Being Top Chick at a small market AM radio station has its moments, but it’s all good. Got a  couple of projects that are in the works that aren’t quite ready for publication but a couple are ripe for the picking.

It was during the Christmas holidays that I taught myself to loom knit. It’s a form of knitting using either a round or rectangular piece of wood (or plastic) with pegs that yarn is wrapped around that allows different stitches to be knitted by using a specially made hook.  I couldn’t quite figure out the printed instructions on how to get started, but I did have the where with all to visit youtube to find more tutorial videos on loom knitting. When I finally got it all figured out, I was off and running like I’d been doing it a good long while.  I made my first scarf with two different shades of red and slightly different textures and it would up being really long too.  It was from that moment I was HOOKED, so to speak.  I found myself heading toward Michael’s and Hobby Lobby to look for yarn and accessories I needed to get the job done. I also went to different websites to find knitting looms and whatever else I could find that  worked with what I was doing.

I began making scarfs by knitting one for my best friend and then one of my neighbors. It didn’t take me too long before I had a ephiphany of sorts. I could knit scarfs for not only people but for their pups too. The funds brought in by selling the scarfs are planned to help local animal shelters.  I’ve also found out that Dementia patients are fidgety and can use something to keep their hands occupied. What knitters and crocheters are doing is making them a twiddlemitt. It’s one of those pieces that the person with dementia can place their hand in the mitt and twiddle with charms and etc. that are sewn into the wall of the insides.  I am in the process of making my first twiddlemitt for a friend with dementia. This is something I want to continue after I complete this first mitt.  I have found a creative project I love doing and I can also use those projects to help others in the process. I can’t help but wonder where this goes and what will result from my efforts.

If anyone reading this wants a matching set of scarfs or a twiddlemitt for someone with dementia or altzheimers, I can be contacted at charlene@wdngmedia.com or at WDNG at 256-236-8291 for more information.

God Bless!
